It can be difficult to know which string to order when one needs replacing, so here are a few tips to help you order the correct string!
To order the right string, you will need to know:
- whether your harp is a Pedal or Lever harp
- if you have a particular brand in mind
- whether the string is gut, wire or nylon
- which octave the string is in (more info)
- and which note
It can also be helpful to know the make and model of your harp when talking to Ranji.
Need to know which octave and which note? Middle C is in the 4th octave. This is a good reference point to work from.

Hello, do you have a list of prices and brands of strings you supply? I just wrote to Denwar harps and he said to contact you. I’m not sure what I need and can afford yet.
I have a 32 string lever harp made by a student of the ex Peter Kempster who had Kempster Instruments in South Aust. years ago. It is similar to his Bardic harp but a bit smaller and not a round back.
Some of the strings I bought off him years ago were in packets with the brand names of Pirastro (Nycor for Folk harp and Vanderbilt nylon)
At this stage… I mainly need 7 wound nylon??? or wire strings??? of some kind for the C-B below middle C. I like the deeper sound they give. Can you give me an estimate what they would cost?
Then I may also need some of the nylons from Middle C to D in the 1st octave. I might order them later on as I do have quite a few spare nylons.
I have some old packets by Schubert called Concert strings and were for some of the strings in the 4th and 5th octave. They are called Wound on Nylon. I don’t know if they are the ones I call “wire strings”. They must be what’s on there now which looks like heavy guitar strings. Not sure what they are called but they have a soft “fluffy” looking center made of quite a few strands of soft thread with the silvery colored metal wound around it.? The F and C strings look more of a coppery color but have the same soft white center. I assume they are the Schubert strings. They have been on for many years now.
On my website is a photo of the harp. (Though I don’t have any of my harp music and songs on there yet!)
The levers have NEVER worked. Do you know if it would it be possible to replace a few with ones that do work without making more holes. That is the problem I suppose. So maybe it is better to leave it all alone… unless I can adjust them somehow?

Hello, I have a celtic harp (no pedals) which desperately needs most strings replaced. I have changed house several times over the last 10 years and my harp has not fared well.I live in Bungendore , just out of Canberra. Do you know anyone that does that sort of thing?

We would recommend bowbrand lever gut strings.
